Breville Electric Screwdriver

Breville is an iconic Australian consumer electronics company. The brief is to capture the Breville design values in a new product typology for the brand. I built several foam models of the form that needed to house a defined set of electronic components while maintaining the clean aesthetic that identifies it as a Breville product. The final design for this electric screwdriver was selected based on it's ergonomic performance for household projects whilst satisfying the technical and aesthetic requirements. This project was part of a Product Engineering subject in my Industrial Design education. The primary learning from this project was how to prepare a consumer product for manufacturing.

This project started with primary research into the Breville brand. I understood the qualities that are imbued in a Breville product.

I conducted a competitor analysis to learn more about the details included in other electric screwdriver devices.

The most beneficial research process was conducting two product autopsies. I learned in finer detail, the internal components used in consumer electric screwdrivers and drills. This became a guide for the component sizes that would be implemented in the final design.

I built 18 foam models by hand to explore different forms and test their ergonomic performance.

This final design was selected as it performed best ergonomically, whilst practically being able to contain all of the required internal components. It also captures the minimal Breville aesthetic with the opportunity to implement quality materials across the product.
